The end of shared Netflix accounts has not escaped anyone. Since the end of May, the platform has tightened the screw on the exchange of passwords between family and friends. From now on, an account should only be used by people in the household.
To do this, Netflix has chosen to ensure that the access of a third party is automatically cut off after a certain time. To accompany this reframing, the company gives a subscription holder the ability to verify who is connected to their package and manually disconnect devices.
A “more rigorous” application of the rules
For people who benefit from “free access” with a loved one, they have two options: take their own subscription or become an “additional subscriber”. The new offer of Netflix “Essential with advertising” offers access to the catalog from 5.99 euros.
When becoming an additional subscriber, an additional cost of 5.99 euros will be applied to offer personalized access to a loved one, paid by the holder of the offer.
There is no account termination, therefore, if the password continues to be shared.
Netflix wants to have a “slightly more rigorous” application of its rules of use, in particular on the obligation to be part of a household to benefit from its service. The company confirms that the application of the additional cost is only carried out once the “additional subscriber” option is activated by the holder of the offer.
For borrowers, there is also no penalty.
It is simply to be expected that access to the platform will stop for devices that are not part of the household associated with the subscription you are using. In theory 31 days, although Netflix did not want to confirm this term.
