Four facts you (maybe) didn’t know about Street Fighter

Swapped first names, fantasized character and prolific saga: the Street Fighter license is not without its anecdotes.

That’s it, Street Fighter VI came out. Seven years after the fifth episode, the saga is renewed, especially in terms of graphics and accessibility, to the delight of fighting game lovers, like the professional player Kayane, but also of novices. It’s also an opportunity for Tech & Co to return to the iconic fighting game franchise in four hilarious anecdotes.

From a translation error… to one of the most powerful characters in the game

Did you know that one of the Street Fighter characters owes its existence to… a translation error? Inside street fighter iiReleased in 1991, Ryu’s emblematic character repeats on several occasions: “If you don’t beat shoryuken, you can’t win.”

Here, Ryu is referring to one of his special moves, the “shoryuken”. But when the game came to the West, a translation error changed everything: a mix-up between Chinese and Japanese led to the English version of Ryu saying “you have to defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance.” Among the players, no doubt: Sheng Long is a secret character, probably very powerful, to unlock.

The bug became the stuff of legend, and gaming magazines of the time, where gamers found codes and cheats, took advantage of it, passing off the enigmatic Sheng Long as an absolute master of combat while Capcom didn’t. being absolutely. does not exist. It wasn’t until 2008, after countless rumors, that Capcom decided to officially introduce the character of Sheng Long. And obviously, his catchphrase is no coincidence: “you have to beat me to have a chance.”

names and confusion

This is probably one of the most famous anecdotes of Street Fighter– The key characters of the license have undergone some name changes during their adventures. To leave from street fighter ii in the United States, Capcom preferred to change the name from “Mr Bison” to “Balrog'” due to the name’s resemblance to Mike Tyson, who was then a boxing superstar.

But then we had to change the name of Balrog (who was another character) Vega, and Vega (who was also a character) Mr Bison. From Japan to the United States, the obvious confusion that resulted among players from different horizons pushed them to look for new nicknames to qualify the characters… And this custom remained.

The dangerous cinematographic exercise

Like many video game licenses, Street Fighter It has not escaped the cinematographic adaptation, an exercise that is often complicated and that rarely turns out to be a good idea. Unfortunately, this was the case for Capcom’s mainstay. Several movies based on the games have been made, but there is one in particular that has written history.

With Jean-Claude Van Damme in the title role, as well as Kylie Minogue and Raul Julia, street fighter: the ultimate fight, inspired by street fighter ii, it is what is called a “complete turnip”, so much so that the film has entered the legend. The shooting was so anarchic that the British newspaper The Guardian dedicates a long article to him in 2019, revealing behind the scenes. Here you have the trailer, for the bravest.

A registration license

Street Fighter achieved, in 2011, the record for the most prolific game series of all time. It has already exhibited, more than ten years ago, 133 titles, if we count the games and their different versions, which are practically uncountable. As for the “official” games, there are about thirty of them.

street fighter 6, released on June 2, is therefore the last of the license. It should also be the work that will allow the series to pass the symbolic threshold of 50 million games sold. According to the latest figures reported by Capcom, by the end of 2022, Street Fighter it was at 49 million in sales.
