In Nantes they create Wayfe, an equivalent of Waze for pedestrians

The participative application makes it possible to identify dangerous events on the street and propose alternative routes.

An application to take the safest path: this is the idea of the creators of Wayfe. Thanks to a system inspired by the Waze participatory application, pedestrian users can report incidents they encounter on the way. The app then suggests alternative, safer routes to avoid these incidents. It was implemented in April and is currently only available in the city of Nantes.

Already 6000 users

Events can be reported according to various categories: verbal aggression, physical aggression, suspicious presence… The application also offers to indicate the streets judged by users as the “most reassuring streets”, such as those monitored by cameras or well-lit at night . Today, Wayfe has 6,000 users.

Finally, for those who want to go further, the application offers, through a paid subscription, an attack or crash detection system.

“If you start to accelerate, or suddenly change route, the app will vibrate your phone for about ten seconds with the flash. If there is no response from you, we consider that you are in danger, and we alert your security circle”, explains Marius Bouffant, co-creator of the application.

The creators explain, on their website, having imagined the application “in the face of the growing feeling of insecurity” in their city, Nantes. These types of apps, like HandsAway, aimed at preventing street harassment, emerged in recent years, but were quickly hijacked by malicious individuals.
