What to do if someone is spying on you with an AirTag?

Apple beacons are hijacked to spy primarily on women. The company offers resources to limit and avoid this type of practice, which constitutes a crime.

On Monday June 12, a young woman denounced on Twitter that she and one of her friends had been tracked using AirTags, the small tags that Apple sells to easily find their objects. There are several resources to report this practice, which constitutes a crime and, therefore, can be grounds for reporting.

The case of these two young women is far from being the first of its kind. last year the the phenomenon had spread in the United States but also in France, being the subject of many tweets of concern on social networks.

What happens if you discover an AirTag in your things? File a complaint as it is a crime. Spying on someone without their knowledge with a tracking device is punishable by jail time.

Indeed, according to article 226-1 of the criminal code, the fact of undermining the privacy of the private life of others “through any process” is punishable by one year in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros.

And the police can use some methods provided by Apple to find the perpetrator.

To begin with, Apple establishes in its “Recommendations on legal procedures” (see Chapter J), the following: “With a serial number, Apple can provide the associated account information in response to the legally valid request for the originator’s country “. .” Therefore, it is necessary to obtain the serial number of the device to support a claim.

Find the serial number

To find the latter, several options are possible. By bringing the AirTag close to your iPhone, or any other smartphone compatible with NFC technology, a notification will be activated, allowing the opening of a web page indicating the serial number of the device.

It is also possible to see it directly on the AirTag, since it is indicated on the battery. The most complex procedure involves disassembling and then reassembling the AirTag. It is precisely detailed on Apple’s dedicated website.

However, it should be noted that AirTag’s pairing history, which allows you to see who paired you with your device, is only available for a period of 25 days. Therefore, it is advisable, in case of unsolicited tracking by an AirTag, to carry out these procedures quickly if you wish to file a complaint.

Detect an AirTag

Apple has also introduced “features [créées] specifically to prevent someone from being able to track you without your knowledge.” sound signal, and the person it was placed on will be able to detect it.

It is also possible, thanks to the Find function of the iPhone, to receive a notification if a strange device is detected nearby. Full procedures for enabling these features are available on Apple’s website.
