German authorities on Wednesday opened an investigation into Rammstein frontman Till Lindeman, accused by several women of sexual assault after concerts.
The Berlin Prosecutor’s Office is investigating “alleged facts” related to “sexual crimes and drug distribution,” he revealed to AFP, confirming information published by the press. Lindeman denies the allegations.
Several of the complaints were filed by third parties, that is, “by people unrelated to the reported facts,” the prosecution clarifies.
The case gained public exposure in late May when a 24-year-old Irish woman accused the artist of drugging and sexually abusing her after a concert in Lithuania.
As a result of this complaint, several other young women described similar events: they would be placed in the first rows of the public at concerts, filmed and photographed so that the vocalist could choose which ones they would then be invited to private parties. The same complaints say that some of the young women were drugged for the 60-year-old artist to abuse them.
Lindeman denies all the allegations, and his lawyers say they are “invariably false,” promising “immediate legal action” against all the allegations.
Rammstein, one of the most popular metal bands in the world, are known for their provocative theatrical concerts, with lots of pyrotechnics, and are currently touring Europe.
In Austria and Switzerland there were calls to boycott the concerts over the allegations against Lindeman.
