Commission finds Boris Johnson ‘lied’ to MPs about Partygate case

The parliamentary committee that investigated the Partygate case concluded that Boris Johnson misled MPs and was “deliberately false”.

The report of the Committee on Privileges of the House of Commons (lower house of parliament), released this Thursday, concludes that the former prime minister “was aware of the rules and guidelines related to Covid-19” when he organized the parties in a residence official, in Downing Street, during the period of confinement, writes the British newspaper The Guardian.

Boris Johnson reportedly “misled the Assembly” when he said the rules had been adhered to and “was deliberately false when he tried to reinterpret his statements before the Assembly to avoid their clear meaning and rephrase the clear impression he intended to give.”

This because the former leader of the British government argued “that the lack of social distancing in meetings was admissible within the scope of the exceptions that allowed meetings” during the pandemic, presenting “legally impermissible reasons to justify meetings.”

The commission decreed the suspension of Boris Johnson for 90 days, a punishment that is practically null, since he himself resigned as a deputy last Friday, after receiving the report on the Partygate case and predicting that he would be expelled from the position he held.

The document, which still has to be voted on by the deputies, also calls for the former prime minister to be withdrawn from access to Parliament facilities, contrary to what is usually granted to former heads of government.

Reacting to the commission’s findings, Boris Johnson said he was the target of a “political assassination” and reaffirmed that he believed he had “done nothing wrong”.
