The President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, this Thursday decorated King Carlos III of the United Kingdom, in London, with the Grand Collar of the Order of the Tower and Sword, of Courage, Loyalty and Merit, announced the Presidency. The distinction was presented to the British monarch during a meeting at Buckingham Palace this morning.
The same decoration had previously been awarded to the monarch’s mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
The President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, was received this Thursday with military honors at Buckingham Palace, when he was received by King Carlos III on the occasion of the 650th anniversary of the Portuguese-British Alliance.
The oldest diplomatic relationship between the two countries still in force dates back to the Treaty of Tagilde, assassinated on July 10, 1372, reinforced by the Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Alliance on June 16, 1373 concluded by King Edward III of England and Afonso I From Portugal.
The event was promoted by Portugal-UK 650, an unofficial, non-profit voluntary initiative that organized the celebrations for the 650th anniversary of the Luso-British Alliance.
