Boris Johnson deliberately misled the UK parliament about partying in Downing Street during the covid-19 lockdown when he was prime minister, a UK parliamentary committee ruled on Thursday.
The commission says the former British prime minister would have been suspended from parliament for 90 days for “repeated disrespect for parliament and for attempts to undermine the parliamentary process” had he not resigned last week.
Johnson called the report “prolonged political murder” and accused the committee of being “undemocratic.”
Boris Johnson announced his resignation as an MP last week after being told he would be punished for lying to parliament.
In the lengthy statement of resignation, Johnson accused the commission of inquiry of wanting to find him guilty “from the outset” and “regardless of the facts”.
The former prime minister was the subject of a parliamentary inquiry into statements he made when he repeatedly claimed that health restrictions were being respected in Downing Street during the covid-19 pandemic, despite news that parties were being held.
Boris Johnson, whose career has been a rollercoaster of scandal and upheaval, led the Conservatives to a landslide victory in 2019, only to be forced out by his own party less than three years later.
