US announces additional $920 million in humanitarian aid for Syria

The United States announced this Thursday an additional support of 920 million dollars (850 million euros) of humanitarian aid to Syria within the framework of the VII Brussels Conference “Supporting the future of Syria and the region.”

The decision, released in a statement by the Secretary of State for Civil Security, Democracy and Human Rights, Uzra Zeya, raises the support granted in 2023 to 1.1 billion dollars and almost 16.9 billion dollars (15.6 billion euros) since the beginning of the country’s crisis in 2011.

The decision is justified by the humanitarian aid needs exacerbated by the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria last February, and in the “engagement with the Syrian people, urging other donors to increase their contributions and when Syria continues to face several challenges due to years of war, terrorism and natural disasters”.

During the VII Conference in Brussels, Uzra Zeya reaffirmed the importance of guaranteeing humanitarian access to all regions of the country, and urged the UN Security Council to re-authorize the passage of United Nations aid through posts in July Syrian borders.

The statement also notes the Secretary of State’s concern about the deteriorating refugee situation in the region, including the rise in anti-refugee rhetoric, and reaffirms that conditions inside Syria do not guarantee a safe, voluntary, dignified return and sustainable to the country. .

Uzra Zeya also stressed that a political solution based on UN Security Council Resolution 2254 “remains the only way to end the suffering of the Syrian people” and stressed that the United States “will continue to promote respect for the dignity and human rights of all Syrians and continue to support Syrian civil society in seeking justice and accountability for human rights abuses and violations.”
