The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, admitted on Thursday to be “very concerned about the world’s position” in relation to the climate, that is, with the “lack of ambition and cooperation”, and stressed that current policies will lead to a catastrophe”.
“Countries are a long way from delivering on climate promises and commitments. I see a lack of ambition. Lack of trust. Lack of support. Lack of cooperation. And a host of issues around clarity and credibility. The agenda climate is in the offing”. undermined,” Guterres told a news conference in New York.
At a time when the world should be accelerating climate action, it is instead going backwards, the United Nations (UN) leader advocated.
“Current policies are pushing the world towards a temperature rise of 2.8 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. That spells catastrophe. Yet the collective response remains depressing. We are headed for disaster, eyes well wide open, and many are willing to bet everything on wishful thinking, untested technologies, and magic bullets.
“It is time to wake up and take a step forward,” appealed Guterres, who has the climate agenda as one of the main axes of his mandate.
According to the former Portuguese prime minister, it is still possible to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, but it will require carbon emissions to be cut by 45% by 2030.
Demanding action from governments, Guterres singled out fossil fuels, urging countries to phase them out, moving away from oil, coal and gas and massively increasing investment in renewable energy.
