Husband confesses to killing mother of five missing in France

A man confessed to killing his wife, who disappeared in western France two and a half months ago, and even led investigators to where her body was, French police said Friday.

Karine Esquivillon, 54 years old and a mother of five, disappeared without a trace from her home in the Pays de la Loire region on March 27.

His mobile phone, without a SIM card but with a picture of one of his daughters, was found two weeks later by the mayor in a ditch next to a parking lot.

As police called for witnesses to appear, husband Michel Pialle described Karine Esquivillon as having left “voluntarily”, although some family members questioned this claim.

In late May, Pialle told AFP his “anxiety was increasing day by day”. On Wednesday, the police arrested him during a search of the family home and seized the couple’s two vehicles.

The man eventually told investigators he had accidentally killed his wife while wielding a gun, a source close to the investigation said, confirming reports from the daily newspaper Le Parisien.

“Mr. Pialle has made the decision to explain himself,” his lawyer Antoine Ory told AFP in a text message. Pialle admitted the facts and “showed investigators where to find his body,” prosecutor Emmanuelle Lepissier told AFP in a text message.

The body was found in a wooded area a few miles from the couple’s home, according to Le Parisien.
