Vladimir Putin says the Ukrainian counteroffensive has “no chance” of success

Ukraine launched a counteroffensive in early June with the aim of repelling Russian forces from the areas they occupy in the south and east. On Friday, Putin judged that the Ukrainian counteroffensive “has no chance” of succeeding and called Zelensky a “shame on the Jewish people.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday called his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, a Jew, a “shame on the Jewish people,” once again accusing Ukraine of being in the hands of neo-Nazis to justify his armed operation there.

“I have many Jewish friends since childhood. And they say that Zelensky is not a Jew, but what a shame for the Jewish people. It’s not a joke,” he said during an interview at an economic forum.

He also assured that the counteroffensive launched by the Ukrainian forces to repel the Moscow forces had “no chance” of success.

Referring to an ongoing Kiev offensive in southern Ukraine, Putin said that “the Ukrainian armed forces have no chance there or in other areas.” The Russian president was speaking at an economic forum in Saint Petersburg (northwest) that AFP was unable to attend due to lack of accreditation, but which was broadcast live on Russian television.

Ukrainian forces “used their so-called strategic reserves to break through the (Russian) defenses, consolidate their own and advance. None of these objectives were achieved,” Vladimir Putin said.

He reaffirmed that Ukraine suffered “very large losses” and considered that it will not be able to fight “for a long time” due to the exhaustion of its military equipment.

Moscow continues to insist that Ukraine’s ongoing offensive on Russian-held positions is a failure. kyiv claims to have liberated a handful of towns and one hundred square kilometers, mainly on the southern front.

According to military analysts, Ukraine has not yet launched the bulk of its forces in its counteroffensive, and is still testing the front to determine its weak points.
