The film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” has been banned in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) because one of its scenes featured a poster supporting transgender children, a distributor said Friday.
The animated movie was set to be released in the UAE later this month.
Distributor VOX Cinema confirmed to AFP that the film will not be released in cinemas in the UAE, without releasing further details.
Sony’s animated film sparked discussion by including a scene showing a blue, pink and white flag with the English caption: “Protect trans children.”
A widely circulated social media post “warned mothers and fathers” that the film “promotes homosexuality and gender reassignment”. “Protect your children,” he added.
It should be noted that in 2021 the Emirates announced an end to cinema censorship.
