A 31-year-old man was charged with three murders on Friday in the wake of attacks in Nottingham on Tuesday, police said.
The man is also the subject of three attempted murder charges and will appear before Nottingham High Court on Saturday.
The police did not provide any further information, namely about the nationality, which according to the European press was Portuguese.
Foreign Secretary João Gomes Cravinho said on Friday he was in contact with British authorities about whether the man detained as a suspect in the killing of three people in Nottingham this week has Portuguese nationality.
“Recently this morning we discovered that the suspect is said to be of Portuguese nationality. We are investigating the matter but will be in close contact with the British authorities on this.”he told journalists after meeting his British counterpart, James Cleverly.
