“God save the Queen”. This is the curious formula used by Joe Biden to conclude a speech this Friday dedicated to the fight against armed violence. The 80-year-old Democrat had just spoken at a rally in West Hartford, Connecticut (northeast).
At the end of a speech that did not surprise, he addressed the audience to explain that he could not take as usual to greet the participants, but that he was going to pose for photos. “Okay? God save the queen, old man” he shot himself then as a conclusion. (“Okay? God save the Queen, man.”)
A White House spokeswoman said she was “speaking to someone in the crowd” with the comment, but did not provide further context. The formulation may seem all the more incongruous since it is now King Charles III who reigns in England, and she is no longer a queen.
a mistake
The blunders to which Joe Biden has been accustomed for years are routinely pointed out by his more virulent Republican opponents, who want to see them as a sign of impaired mental faculties.
The American president responds to these attacks with touches of humor. He also highlights the “wisdom” acquired during his long political life, as well as his political and diplomatic successes.
In his speech on Friday, he joked about his age. Referring to the unsuccessful fight for years to toughen the gun law and the fatigue of activists, the US president launched: “You’re tired. I understand. But try to go back to that at 110 years.”
In polls, most voters believe that Joe Biden, the 2024 presidential candidate, is too old to run again. A fall of the American president has recently been the subject of much comment. The Democrat would be 86 years old at the end of a second term.
