Russia says it thwarted drone attack on oil refinery

Russia said on Saturday it had destroyed three drones targeting an oil refinery in the Bryansk border region in the south of the country as Ukraine continued its counter-offensive against Russian forces.

“Russian air defense systems prevented a night attack by Ukrainian forces on Druzhba oil refinery in Novozybkov district”said the governor of the Bryansk region Alexander Bogomaz.

“Thanks to the professionalism of our army, three aerial drones were destroyed,” he added, without mentioning any damage.

The number of drone strikes has increased in recent months, with Kiev and Moscow claiming to have stopped some of them over the week.

On Russian soil, oil installations – essential for supplying troops – appear to be the priority targets for drone strikes.

The Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula, which Kiev has repeatedly said it intends to reclaim, is also under regular attack.

Russian forces shot down nine drones on the peninsula, its governor, Sergei Aksyonov, said Thursday.

Last week, a drone hit a residential building in the southern Russian city of Voronezh, injuring two people.

This was the first time that the presence of drones was recorded in Voronezh, a city of about one million people located in a deeper region of Russia.
