Mexican authorities find 129 migrants in a cargo truck

Mexican authorities found 129 migrants of various nationalities crammed into a cargo truck in the state of Veracruz, in the eastern part of the country, the National Institute of Migration (INM) reported this Sunday.

Migrants “originating from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and India” were located on Friday night, the INM said in a statement quoted by the French news agency AFP.

The INM reported that 51 of the migrants, from Guatemala, were sent back to the country, to the city of Tecún Uman (center).

Nineteen unaccompanied minors from Guatemala and Honduras were transported to a special reception center, while the rest were transferred to a shelter.

Four alleged human traffickers were arrested and handed over to the Attorney General’s Office, as well as two vehicles that were guarding the truck and which were seized, reported the Mexican newspaper Crónica.

Thousands of migrants from various countries cross Mexico every day to try to reach the United States of America.

Along the way, they often fall victim to organized crime groups or human traffickers.

The region is facing an unprecedented migratory flow, with more than 2.76 million undocumented immigrants intercepted by the United States at the border with Mexico in 2022, according to Crónica.
