Ecuador: the woman who woke up in the middle of the wake is finally dead

A 76-year-old Ecuadorian woman woke up in early June, lying in her coffin and her loved ones watching over her body. She then she was rushed to the hospital.

A short-lived renaissance. Bella Montoya, the 76-year-old woman who woke up in the middle of a wake in early June in Ecuador, arousing the astonishment of her relatives, finally died seven days later, her relatives announced Saturday to the Associated Press.

The septuagenarian’s son, Gilberto Barbera Montoya, said his mother died Friday night in the intensive care unit of the public hospital where she was being treated. Information later confirmed by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Health indicating that Bella Montoya did not survive an ischemic stroke.

His son said he wanted an explanation of the exact circumstances of this death, which this time is well confirmed. The situation “is not going to stay like this,” he warned. The sister of the disappeared person has also filed a complaint and is looking for the doctor who had mistakenly declared the death of the septuagenarian a few weeks earlier.

His relatives watched over his body for 5 hours.

Bella Montoya woke up suddenly at the beginning of June, when her relatives had been watching over her body for five hours. She was in a coffin when her family heard her breathing.

With his “left hand he was hitting the walls and his hand was shaking,” said his son Gilberto Barbera Montoya.

The story went around the country, and the world, with the local press hailing an unexpected “resurrection.” The septuagenarian was then taken to the hospital.

The 76-year-old woman had been declared dead for the first time by mistake at a public hospital in the coastal town of Babahoyo, in the southwest of the country, after suffering a first suspicious stroke.
