The images date from May 28, nine days before the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam. A white car is curiously parked in the building. The roof of the vehicle has been removed. Barrels are found inside, which seems to indicate the presence of explosives inside. A mine even seems to be attached to the lid of one of them.
For kyiv, these photos, taken by a Ukrainian drone and transmitted to the Associated Press agency, are proof of Russia’s involvement in the explosion that caused the collapse of the dam, located on the Dnieper River.
On June 6, the Norwegian seismological institute Norsar detected “an explosion” of magnitude “between 1 and 2” and coming from the region of the Kakhovka dam at the time of the destruction.
Since then, the two countries have continued to pass the buck and blame each other. For the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, it is an “act of Russian terror” and a “brutal ecocide” for which the Kremlin’s armed forces must “be fully responsible”.
More than 50 dead and 11,000 evacuated
Moscow for its part denounced “an act of barbarism” and “sabotage” by Ukraine. Kiev Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the dam explosion was aimed at “depriving Crimea of water,” the region annexed by Vladimir Putin in 2014.
The destruction of the dam caused considerable damage, either in the areas controlled by kyiv or by Moscow. More than 11,000 people had to be evacuated due to flooding.
On Monday, the death toll stood at 52. According to Russian authorities, 35 people were killed in the Kherson area under their control. The Ukrainian Interior Minister, for his part, reported 17 dead and 31 missing.
