Ukraine’s defense minister this Monday praised the speech of the President of the European Parliament at the Assembly of the Republic in Portugal, underlining Roberta Metsola’s criticism of the Portuguese Communist Party’s (PCP) position on the war.
“Brilliant example of Roberta Metsola fighting with honesty and truth against hypocrisy and ‘reconciliation'”stressed Oleksii Reznikov in a publication on the social network Twitter.
Reznikov also thanked Metsola’s “dedication and support” “to Ukraine and democracy”, in a publication with a video presenting the position of the President of the European Parliament and the Communist deputy Paula Santos in speeches at the Assembly of the Republic in Lisbon .

Roberta Metsola on Friday challenged communist deputy Paula Santos to speak in Kiev’s parliament in front of Ukrainian deputies.
“I have decided to speak in the parliament of Ukraine on April 1, 2022. [deputada Paula Santos] to say what you said here in front of the Ukrainian delegates. To talk to those deputies who don’t talk to women for weeks, whose children can’t go to school (…). It’s not about sitting down and getting people to negotiate, it’s about getting Russia out of Ukraine. No more and no less”Metsola said in a speech to the PCP delegate.
The communist parliamentary leader repeated that “it is necessary to stop inciting and fueling the war in Ukraine and to open negotiation channels”and meant that “the EU that mobilizes and makes millions of euros available for armaments is the same that refuses to value wages and pensions”.
The PCP responded to the President of the European Parliament on Sunday “What exists in Ukraine is a simulacrum of parliament, from whose composition democratic, leftist and progressive forces have been banned and banned”.
“The PCP rejects and rejects the expressions of arrogance and meddling that the President of the European Parliament decided to exercise during her passage through the Assembly of the Republic”reads in the note, adding that “Metsola should know that what exists in Ukraine is really a simulacrum of the parliament, from whose composition democratic, leftist and progressive forces have been banned and banned.”.
Roberta Metsola took part in a debate in the Assembly of the Republic on Friday that she considered “very lively” by the deputies of the various Portuguese parties.
It was the first time that a president of a European institution took part in a debate with parliamentary leaders in the plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic.
During the afternoon, Roberta Metsola participated in the Council of State, at the invitation of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
Less than a year before the European Parliament elections, the meeting discussed the current status of the European agenda.
