A man armed with an ax injured four people in three Chinese restaurants in New Zealand on Monday night, police said today.
The attack took place in Albany, a suburb in northern Auckland.
Police arrested a 24-year-old suspect at the scene. The man, of Chinese nationality, appeared in court today. Police did not immediately give a motive for the attack.
One of the customers told the New Zealand Herald he was eating when the man came in and started attacking his friend, who was seriously injured.
“I was in shock. When I realized what was happening, he tried to hit me,” said the man, asking not to be identified. “I blocked his ax with my hand. He also tried to hit my head,” he said, adding that the person still chased them out of the establishment and then turned and entered another restaurant.
