The Ukrainian Defense Minister praised on Monday the speech of the President of the European Parliament in the Assembly of the Republic in Portugal, underlining Roberta Metsola’s criticism of the position of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) on the war.
“Shining example of Roberta Metsola fighting hypocrisy and appeasement with honesty and truth,” said Oleksii Reznikov in a post on the social network Twitter.
Reznikov also thanked Metsola’s “commitment and support” “to Ukraine and democracy”, in a post with a video presenting the position of the president of the European Parliament and the communist deputy Paula Santos in speeches delivered in the Assembly of the Republic in Lisbon.

Roberta Metsola challenged the communist deputy Paula Santos on Friday to speak in the kyiv parliament before the Ukrainian deputies.
“I have decided to speak in the Ukrainian Parliament on April 1, 2022. [deputada Paula Santos] say what you said here in front of the Ukrainian deputies. To talk to those deputies who don’t talk to women for weeks, whose children can’t go to school (…). It’s not about sitting around the table and getting people to negotiate, it’s about getting Russia out of the Ukraine. Neither more nor less”, said Metsola addressing the PCP deputy.
The communist parliamentary leader reiterated that “it is necessary to stop instigating and fueling the war in Ukraine and open channels of negotiation”, and considered that “the EU that mobilizes and makes available millions of euros for weapons is the same one that refuses to value the salaries”. and pensions”.
The PCP responded on Sunday to the president of the European Parliament considering that “in Ukraine what exists is a simulation of Parliament, whose composition was prohibited and illegal the democratic, left and progressive forces.”
“The PCP rejects and repudiates the expressions of arrogance and interference that the President of the European Parliament decided to exercise during her time in the Assembly of the Republic”, reads the note, which adds that “Metsola must know that in truth in Ukraine what exists It is a simulacrum of Parliament, from whose composition democratic, left-wing and progressive forces were prohibited and outlawed”.
Roberta Metsola participated this Friday in a debate in the Assembly of the Republic that she considered “very lively” by the deputies of the different Portuguese parties.
It was the first time that a president of a European institution participated in a debate with parliamentary leaders in the plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic.
During the afternoon, Roberta Metsola participated in the Council of State, at the invitation of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
The meeting addressed perspectives on the current state of the European agenda, less than a year before the elections to the European Parliament.
