Axe-wielding man injures four in New Zealand restaurants

A man armed with an ax wounded four people Monday night at three Chinese restaurants in New Zealand, police said Tuesday.

The attack took place in the northern Auckland suburb of Albany.

Police arrested a 24-year-old suspect at the scene. The man, a Chinese national, appeared in court on Tuesday. Police did not immediately give a motive for the attack.

One of the patrons told the New Zealand Herald that he was having dinner when the man walked in and started attacking his friend, who was seriously injured.

“I was in shock. When I realized what was happening, he tried to hit me,” said the man, who asked not to be named. “I blocked his ax with my hand. He was also trying to hit my head,” he said, adding that the individual still chased them out of the establishment and then turned and went into another restaurant.

“We recognize how terrifying this incident was for the people involved and the community at large, and we are making sure there is support for both the victims and their friends and family,” Police Inspector Stefan Sagar said in a statement.
