A cross that Pope Benedict XVI used to wear on his chest has been stolen from a church in southern Germany where it was on display.
The object was in a box on the wall of the church of St. Oswald, in Traunstein, Bavaria, where Benedict XVI spent his teenage years.
According to AFP, which quotes the local police, on Monday they raided the box and stole the cross that Benedict XVI had bequeathed to the parish.
“For the Catholic Church, the value of this sacred object cannot be quantified,” the Bavarian police said in a statement.
The perpetrators of the robbery, whose identities are still unknown, also broke into a kiosk cash register and took the money inside.
Benedict XVI became the first pontiff in six centuries to resign as head of the Catholic Church, in 2013. He died last December at the age of 95.
