United States: Hunter Biden, son of Joe Biden, pleads guilty to tax evasion and illegal possession of a firearm

Joe Biden’s son pleaded guilty in a federal tax evasion case and will reach a plea deal in a second weapons violation case.

Hunter Biden, the son of US President Joe Biden and a recurring target of the Republican opposition, has pleaded guilty in two federal cases involving him, the prosecutor in charge of the case said Tuesday.

He pleaded guilty to part of a federal tax fraud case, says prosecutor David Weiss.

Hunter Biden, 53, will also, according to the same source, reach an agreement with the prosecution in a case of violation of the legislation on firearms, which is equivalent to an admission of guilt. He is accused of having acquired a firearm in 2018 when he was a drug addict.

Joe Biden “endorses” his son

Former President Donald Trump, who is fighting for justice in a series of cases, estimated in a reaction on his “Truth Social” network that Hunter Biden had only received a “fine” and stated that the judicial system was “broken”.

The youngest son of the US president – the eldest, Beau, died in 2015 of brain cancer – described his addiction problems, particularly to crack, in a book published in the spring of 2021.

In this book, Hunter Biden, a former lawyer and businessman turned artist, also claims that he has now turned away from alcohol and drugs.

The US president has always publicly supported him and said he was “proud” of him in particular during a heated debate pitting him against Donald Trump ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

Joe Biden also rejects allegations of corruption from the Republican parliamentary opposition that accuses Hunter Biden of having done questionable deals in Ukraine and China while his father was vice president.

“The President and First Lady love their son and support him as he continues to rebuild his life. We will have no further comment,” the White House responded. “My son has not done anything wrong”, Joe Biden had already said in an interview given last May to the MSNBC channel. “I trust him,” he added.
