A Russian attack in Kherson, in southern Ukraine, killed a rescue worker and injured eight others, Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klimenko said today.
“One dead and eight injured [entre] aid workers in Kherson”said the Ukrainian ruler in his personal account on the Telegram social network, denouncing the evidence of “humility and fear” of the Russian army.
‘Injured receive emergency treatment’added Klimenko.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, which confirmed the death toll in a statement and launched an investigation, the “Rescue group came under Russian fire while mitigating the effects of the floods” caused by the destruction of a dam in the region on June 6.
After the explosions that destroyed the dam, the city of Kherson and several neighboring villages, 70 kilometers downstream from the dam on the Dnieper River, saw the water rise several meters.
Rising waters killed at least 16 people in Kiev-controlled areas and forced thousands of civilians to flee the area.
Ukrainian authorities also sent hundreds of rescue teams to the area.
Kiev and Western countries accuse Moscow of destroying the Kakhovka dam, a key infrastructure that supplies water to Russia-annexed Crimea and is on the route of Ukrainian troops to retake occupied territories.
The military offensive launched by Russia in Ukraine on February 24, 2022 has so far led to the flight of more than 14.7 million people – 6.5 million internally displaced persons and more than 8.2 million to European countries – according to the latest data from the UN, which classifies this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).
The Russian invasion – justified by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by the international community at large, which responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and impose political obligations on Russia. and economic sanctions.
