Macron joins 40 to 50 heads of state in Paris at Summit for New Financial Deal

The Summit for the New Financial Pact, where French President Emmanuel Macron hopes to agree on a new global financial stimulus, is expected to gather between 40 and 50 heads of state in Paris this week.

Fonte do Eliseu said this on Tuesday during a briefing with journalists, in which Lusa participated “the idea [da Cimeira] is figuring out how to work together to boost the global economy financially”.

“No one should have to choose between fighting poverty or fighting global warming”according to the same source.

To facilitate this process, France wants to promote a reform of the multilateral development banks and establish a network of regional and national structures to support sustainable development.

The international meeting takes place from Thursday to Friday and is attended by about 100 delegations from different countries, dozens of heads of state and government and multinationals.

The issue of financing for development is of particular importance for Africa, and this summit was attended by about 20 heads of state from the continent, including the President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, but also the President of Senegal, Macky Sall and the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa.

As many countries cannot finance themselves due to the accumulated foreign debt, the Élysée also wants to reform financing instruments, to give states the opportunity to invest if it has a significant impact on the global fight against global warming or in response to extreme phenomena such as natural disasters.

For the French president, the difficulties of recent years in international cooperation, caused by the covid-19 or conflicts such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have led to the “fragmentation of the conversation” between the different political actors and must now be addressed. overcome since there are common problems, especially in relation to the fight against global warming.

The delegations will leave Paris on Friday, with a roadmap that will be further improved at the next G20 meetings, but also at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change or COP 28, which will take place in December in Dubai.

The meetings will take place at the Brongniart Palace, at the Élysée Palace and at the headquarters of UNESCO and the OECD, which are located in the French capital.
