This Portuguese-French councilor in the Chamber of Paris also said that there are several other buildings on fire.

“The first flames reached 20 meters in height. So there are other projects that are being attacked, but in this one there is a great concentration of the American Academy. The police, in less than 10 minutes, were on the scene. the nearest station is closed, the trains don’t stop,” added the Portuguese-French councilor.

The great fire of still unknown origin broke out this Wednesday in a building in the center of Paris, part of which collapsed. There are at least 17 injured, ten of them seriously and two missing.

According to the Paris prosecutor, “a building caught fire and partially collapsed” on rue Saint-Jacques, a few blocks from the Pantheon and the Luxembourg Garden.

The flames filled the sky with clouds of smoke that hung over the city’s monuments and forced the evacuation of nearby buildings, the police said.

Emergency services are continuing operations to determine if anyone is still inside the building, he said, adding that the fire is under control but not extinguished.

Parish council president Florence Berthout said “the explosion was extremely violent” describing glass shards still falling from surrounding buildings.

Paris police spokeswoman Loubna Ata said it was too soon to determine the origin of the fire and could not confirm reports that it was caused by a gas explosion.
