Jack Teixeira, a US soldier suspected of leaking classified US documents, pleaded not guilty this Wednesday to charges that could land him in prison for decades.
The 21-year-old Portuguese scion was arrested in April on charges of distributing confidential defense documents in a discussion forum on the social network Discord, namely about the war in Ukraine or spying on allied countries, leaks that embarrassed Washington.
Teixeira faces six counts of “deliberate withholding and disclosure of secret information related to national defense”, each of which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
The young military man appeared before Judge David Hennessy in Worcester, Massachusetts, this Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to the charges, according to court documents.
Some analysts have compared the potential impact of this information leak to that caused in 2013 by Edward Snowden when he exposed the scope of massive espionage programs launched by the United States after the September 11, 2001 attacks.
