French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday at the opening of the Summit for the New Financial Deal in Paris that “no country should have to choose between reducing poverty and protecting the planet.”
This summit brings together some 50 heads of state between today and Friday, who will try to find, according to the French leader, “new solutions” to combat global warming.
Along with the French president, this morning was the Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, and the President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum.
This summit aims to help overcome the difficulties of multilateralism in recent years, in order to find solutions for sustainable development.
Emmanuel Macron also said that in order to find new financial growth at the global level, it is necessary for “each country to sovereignly choose its path” and that there must be “a shock of public financing”, but also of investment from the private sector.
“There is a lot of liquidity in the world. I don’t think we’re going to be able to completely change this system. But I believe that we can work better with money from the private sector and put it at the service of the progress of our planet,” declared the President.
Under discussion this Thursday and Friday is, as expected by many African and South American leaders present in Paris, new mechanisms to reduce sovereign debt between States, but also at the level of large financial institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank.
