The debris is from Titan. US Coast Guard confirms death of crew member

The United States Northeast Coast Guard confirmed this Thursday that the wreckage it detected next to the Titanic is from OceanGate’s Titan submersible, and that it means that the vehicle’s pressure chamber was lost, killing all five crew members. .

In a press conference, Rear Admiral John Mauger pointed out that a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) first found the “tail” of the submersible at the bottom of the ocean, “almost 500 meters from the bow” of the Titanic.

“Then he found more remains,” he added, and revealed that these are “consistent with the catastrophic rupture” of the submersible’s pressure chamber and that this prompted “immediate notification” to the families of the five crew members.

ROVs that have been participating in the search operations will remain on site to gather further information about the accident. The French and UK consulates have been informed of the process “to ensure that their concerns are fully addressed.”

Although, according to Mauger, it is still too early to make a “chronology” of the accident, sonar buoys launched at the site did not detect “catastrophic events” in the last 72 hours.

In all, five parts of the Titan were found, including the rear of the airlock, but the “debris field will continue to be mapped.”

“My sincere condolences,” he lamented.

On Thursday, US authorities announced that they had found a debris field near the sunken ship Titanic.

“A debris field has been discovered in the search area, by an ROV, near the Titanic. Specialists at the unified command post are evaluating the information,” read a tweet.

The ROV that detected the wreckage is controlled by the Canadian ship Horizon Arctic.
