Russian government cuts road in Rostov to stop the march of mercenaries

Russia has blocked more than 300 kilometers of the highway between Rostov and Moscow, through the city of Voronezh, to prevent mercenaries from the Wagner group from reaching the Russian capital, the region’s governor said on Saturday.

“At the moment, traffic along the M-40 highway in the Rostov region is closed between kilometers 464 to 777,” Alexandr Gusev said.

“I solemnly ask residents to refrain from traveling on regional and local roads,” added the Russian ruler.

The head of the Wagner paramilitary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, claimed responsibility for the occupation of Rostov, a key city in southern Russia for the war in Ukraine, and called for a rebellion against the Russian military command, which he accused of attacking its fighters.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the paramilitary group’s action a rebellion, saying it was a “deadly threat” to the Russian state and treason, guaranteeing a “civil war” would not ensue.

Prigozhin had earlier accused the Russian army of attacking his mercenary camps, causing “a large number of casualties”, accusations denied by the Russian Defense Ministry.
