Ukraine announces new offensives in the east

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine this Saturday announced advances in different directions of the eastern front, as part of the offensive against Moscow’s troops.

According to Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar, the offensive is aimed “in several directions” at the same time, including on the city of Bakhmut, while the Russian side continues intense bombardment of Ukrainian troops.

Maliar, quoted by Ukrinform, referred to the uprising of the Wagner mercenary group in the Russian Federation as “an opportunity” for Ukraine that would prove “the inevitable degradation of the Russian state”.

Despite this, Hanna Maliar appealed to Ukrainian citizens not to relax and to “be careful and prepare for any scenario”.

“We keep working to be stronger and win,” said Maliar, quoted by EFE.

The counter-attack operations are taking place in the midst of a crisis, following the uprising proclaimed by the head of the Wagner paramilitary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, who today claimed the occupation of Rostov, an important city in southern Russia before the war in Ukraine, and called to revolt against the Russian military command, which he accused of attacking his fighters.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin described the paramilitary group’s action as an insurgency, saying it represented a “mortal threat” to the Russian state and a betrayal that guaranteed there would be no “civil war”.

At the end of the afternoon, Prigozhin agreed to suspend the movements of the uprising in Russia against the military command, after negotiating with the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.

Yevgeny Prigozhin accepted the proposal […] to stop the movements of armed men of the Wagner group and take measures to reduce tensions,” the unofficial channel of the Belarusian presidency told the Telegram messaging service.
