China expresses support for Moscow after Wagner group rebellion

China expressed its support for Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday after the rebellion of the Wagner paramilitary group, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.

“The Chinese side expressed its support for the efforts of the leaders of the Russian Federation to normalize the situation in the country in light of the events of June 24. [sábado]”, a day marked by the insurrection, indicated Russian diplomacy in a statement.

China’s statement comes after Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko was received by the head of Chinese diplomacy Gin Gang in Beijing.

During the meeting, the Xi Jinping-led government also “reaffirmed its interest in strengthening Russia’s unity and prosperity.”

Beijing said Qin Gang and Rudenko also discussed “Sino-Russian relations and international and regional issues of common interest.”

These diplomatic contacts between Beijing and Moscow come at a time when Russia is shaken by the brief rebellion of the Wagner paramilitary group, which has seized several military installations in the south of the country.

The head of the Wagner paramilitary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, suspended this Saturday the rebellion movements in Russia against the military command, less than 24 hours after having occupied Rostov, a key city in the south of the country for the war in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the group’s action a rebellion, saying it was a “mortal threat” to the Russian state and a betrayal.

At the end of the day on Saturday, in which the advance of Wagner’s forces was reported some 200 kilometers from Moscow, Prigozhin announced that he had negotiated an agreement with the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko.
