“We celebrate the 48 years of our national independence with the challenge of urgently stopping the outbreaks of terrorist violence that are still taking place in some districts of Cabo Delgado”, declared Filipe Nyusi, in statements to the nation from Praça dos Heróis, within the framework of the central anniversary celebrations in Maputo.

According to Filipe Nyusi, the operational efforts of government forces, with the support of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and Rwanda, are guaranteeing the necessary stability for the return of populations displaced by the conflict, but the challenge remains. before the sprouts. of instability

“In recent times, displaced populations have returned to their places of origin thanks to the courageous actions of the Mozambique Defense Forces, with the support of forces from friendly countries of SADC and Rwanda”, stressed Filipe Nyusi.

The province of Cabo Delgado has been facing an armed insurgency for five years, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State. The conflict has already caused one million displaced people, according to the United Nations, and some 4,000 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registry project.

For the Mozambican head of state, on the 48th anniversary of the proclamation of independence, the nation must continue to favor peace and national unity, two fundamental aspects in the framework of efforts for economic development.

“We are all invited to work so that peace is effective and lasting,” said Filipe Nyusi, highlighting the closure, last week, of the last base of the armed wing of the National Resistance of Mozambique (Renamo), the main opposition party. , in the areas of peace agreements.

“Since 1975, for the first time in Mozambican territory, there has not been an armed political party,” said Filipe Nyusi.

The agreement that culminated in the disarmament of the armed wing of the main opposition party, signed in August 2019, was the third between the Government and Renamo, the first two having been violated and leading to an armed confrontation, after the challenge of the results. elections by that opposition political force.

As part of the process, 5,221 Renamo guerrillas returned to their homes.

Mozambique celebrates this Sunday 48 years since the proclamation of independence in 1975 by the then president Samora Machel, after an armed liberation struggle against the Portuguese colonial regime that began in 1964.
