The Russian president reaffirms his commitment to maintain the war, which he continues to call a “special military operation” in Ukraine. In an interview quoted by the Reuters agency – broadcast by Russian state television this Sunday, but recorded before the rebellion of the Wagner group this Saturday – Vladimir Putin says he remains “confident” in carrying out his plans.
Putin says he “starts and ends the day” thinking about the situation in Ukraine – which remains his “priority” – keeping in constant contact with the country’s Defense Ministry officials.
“We feel confident and, of course, we are in a position to implement all the plans and tasks that lie ahead,” the Russian president assured. “It applies to the defense of the country, it applies to the special military operation, it applies to the economy as a whole and its individual areas.”
These were the first statements by Putin published by the Russian media after the rebellion of the Wagner paramilitary group.
The Russian president described the actions of the group and its leader – Yevgueni Prigozhin – as a “betrayal and a” deadly threat “for the Russian state, but did not rule on the result.
Prigozhin ended up negotiating an agreement with the Kremlin, mediated by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
