The head of European diplomacy on Monday said it is worrying that there is political instability in Russia and that Saturday’s uprising by the Wagner paramilitary group means there are cracks in the Kremlin’s military structure.
“It is not good to see a nuclear power like Russia in a situation of political instability,” defended Josep Borrell, at the entrance of a meeting of the foreign ministers of the European Union (EU) in Luxembourg.
According to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Saturday’s uprising by mercenaries of the Wagner Group shows that “there are cracks in Russia’s military power, which are affecting the political system”.
Borrell stressed that the concerns of the 27 remain unequivocal support for Ukraine, which has been battling an invasion by Russia for more than a year and is the focus of today’s meeting between member states.
The leader of the Wagner paramilitary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, suspended uprising movements in Russia against military command on Saturday less than 24 hours after occupying Rostov, a key city in the south of the country for the logistics of the war in Ukraine.
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin described the group’s action as an insurrection, saying it represented a “mortal threat” to the Russian state and treachery, guaranteeing there would be no “civil war”.
At the end of the day, when the advance of Wagner troops to about 200 kilometers from Moscow was reported, Prigozhin announced that he had negotiated an agreement with the president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.
