Artificial intelligence helps spot Chinese spy balloons over Japan and Taiwan

Several Chinese spy balloons have been detected flying over Asian countries, including Japan and Taiwan. The information was advanced by the BBC after an investigation published in the Panorama program.

Tokyo admits to the British Public Channel that it intends to shoot down the spy balloons in the near future. China, however, does not comment on the issues on the subject.

The research is based on data collected by satellite from an artificial intelligence company. The tools used made it possible to detect the balloons over northern Japan since September 2021.

The images now released by the BBC had never been published. Western experts believe the balloons are equipped with technology capable of collecting vast amounts of data, including images and communications.

In February, a Chinese spy balloon was detected flying over North American territory, having been shot down off the coast of South Carolina, on the Atlantic coast.
