Iran announced on Friday that it had arrested nine foreigners linked to the protests following the death in police custody of the young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini.
“Nine foreign citizens from Germany, Poland, Italy, France, Holland, Sweden, etc. have been arrested on the spot or are involved in the riots,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Mahsa Amini, 22, died on September 16 in a Tehran hospital, three days after morality police arrested her for violating the strict dress code for Iranian women.
At least 83 killed in protests
According to activists and relatives of Mahsa Amini, the young woman died after “a violent blow to the head” delivered by the morality police on the day of her arrest. Authorities have not confirmed. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said the case would be “investigated.” The family filed a complaint against “the perpetrators of her arrest” and Iranians have been demonstrating every night since her death.
These demonstrations are harshly repressed by the authorities. At least 83 people have been killed during these protests in the last two weeks, according to the Oslo-based NGO Iran Human Rights.
