The French president, Emmanuel Macron, considered this Wednesday inexplicable and inexcusable the death of a 17-year-old teenager, the victim of a point-blank shot fired by the police on the outskirts of Paris.
“Nothing. Nothing justifies the death of a young man,” declared the head of state, evoking “the emotion of the entire nation” and expressing “respect and affection” to the victim’s family.
“We have a teenager who was murdered, it is inexplicable, inexcusable and, above all, they are words of affection and pain shared with the family,” Emmanuel Macron told reporters on Wednesday.
The 17-year-old was killed after refusing to obey a roadblock in Nanterre, west of the French capital.
The policeman, the alleged author of the shot, is in custody.
The French president said that the forces of order are made up of “men and women who come from all the districts of the Republic and who are committed to the protection and service” of the country, adding that the case is being investigated.
“The matter was immediately referred to the judicial authorities: I hope they do the job with the speed and serenity that this job requires, and that the truth can be known as soon as possible,” added the President.
Meanwhile, the French government will mobilize 2,000 police and gendarmes to the Nanterre district, on the outskirts of Paris, after the night of riots that followed the death of the 17-year-old at the hands of security forces.
Last night, 31 people were arrested in Nanterre after clashes in which 40 police officers were injured.
In Nanterre, after the death of the young man, forty vehicles were set on fire.
The authorities fear that there will be new riots in Nanterre as well as in other parts of the French capital.
The mayor of Nanterre, Patrick Jarry, asked this Wednesday for “clarification of the circumstances of the tragedy (death of the 17-year-old boy)” and asked the inhabitants of the area to remain calm.
The municipality has already delivered to the police authorities images of the moment the young man was shot and that were captured by surveillance cameras.
