Declaring a state of emergency in France is “politically difficult”, says the Portuguese adviser to the Chamber of Paris

The Portuguese councilor of the Paris City Hall, Hermano Sanches Ruivo, explained this Friday, in statements to TSF, that making decisions such as declaring a state of emergency in France is “always politically difficult” because it affects millions of people. To “calm the situation”, proposing a “state of emergency or a mandatory curfew in as many spaces as possible” are the most viable options for the councilor of the Parisian municipality.

“At other times, other governments waited seven, eight, nine, 10 days before doing it. Therefore, this historical reality is necessarily in the mind of the President and the Government, ”he stressed.

Brother Sanches Ruivo also said that France is witnessing a “propagation of a disturbing situation” and that the “frustration” of the people is manifested through the violence that the country has experienced in recent days.

“Why the looting of supermarkets, shops? Why set fire to buildings, burn good buses? These are two situations that coexist at the same time and spread,” said Brother Sanches Ruivo.

For the councilor for international affairs of the local authorities, it is also important to understand why “many young people” are involved in protest actions.

“The social fracture that we know of, which exists in several countries, has a very strong manifestation here,” stressed Brother Sanches Ruivo.

The councilor considered that “it is important that the Government react and that the municipalities continue to have the mandatory curfew proposal”, but that the “divorce between police and young people are much more important problems, which until now have never been solved”. .

The protests in Paris burned and destroyed several buses and, therefore, the means of transport in Paris have been conditioned, specifically from 9:00 p.m.

“Drivers have the right to stop working if they feel they are in danger,” Brother Sanches Ruivo said.

The death of Nahel, 17, at a traffic control this Tuesday, captured by surveillance cameras, has renewed tension between young people and the police in Nanterre social housing, on the outskirts of Paris, and in other deprived areas of France. capital. .

Clashes with security forces broke out Tuesday night in Nanterre.

The policeman suspected of killing the young man, charged with manslaughter, has been arrested and will remain in custody. On Thursday he asked for “pardon” from the victim’s family.

French President Emmanuel Macron has already called a new crisis meeting for this Friday and has shortened his presence in Brussels, where he is participating in a European summit, to return to Paris.
