France. Nahel’s funeral will take place this Saturday in Nanterre

The funeral of French teenager Nahel, whose death by shooting a police officer on Tuesday sparked three nights of rioting in several French cities, is scheduled for Saturday, the mayor of the municipality of Nanterre, where he originally came from, announced this Friday.

“We must continue to support this family, this mother who will bury her son tomorrow,” Patrick Jarry said in statements to the ‘media’.

About 40,000 police officers were deployed to try to put an end to the disturbances that started in social housing in Nanterre, on the outskirts of Paris, and in other deprived areas of the French capital.

Nahel’s death at a traffic stop on Tuesday, captured on surveillance cameras, has reignited tension between youths and police.

Clashes with security forces broke out in Nanterre on Tuesday night and public buildings were damaged and cars set on fire in the early hours of Thursday, with around 150 people arrested.

The protests continued into the early hours of Friday and spread to several regions of the country, including the capital, with hundreds injured, including police, and arrests.

The police officer suspected of the death of the young man charged with murder has been arrested and remains in custody.
