Turkish ambassador to Portugal dies

Turkish Ambassador to Portugal Murat Karagöz has passed away.

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our esteemed ambassador, Mr. Murat Karagöz. We wish Allah’s mercy to our late ambassador and serenity to his next of kin. Condolences to all his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace”, can be read on the Facebook of the Turkish Embassy in Lisbon.

As DN found out, the diplomat died suddenly while on vacation in Turkey.

This year, Karagöz had presented his credentials to the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, at the Belém Palace, and was officially named ambassador on May 4.

Two days later, the diplomat published an op-ed in DN pointing to the “important tasks of the Turkish Embassy in Lisbon”, after praising Portugal’s role in search and rescue operations following the earthquakes that shook Turkey in February.

In the same article, Karagöz announced that for the first time in Portugal, the Turkish community, with about 1,500 registered voters, could vote from the embassy in the Turkish presidential and parliamentary elections, which took place on May 14.
