The Timorese prime minister said this Saturday that he had assembled an experienced team in the new executive, in order to achieve concrete and immediate results, in a common commitment to “make a difference in the plan, action and management of responsibilities “. “.
“Making the necessary corrections, doing more and doing it better, is the common platform of understanding for the formation of this new Government. Our government practice will be guided by the principles of good government, inclusion and the principle that everyone must obey the law”, said Xanana Gusmão, moments after taking office as Prime Minister of the IX Constitutional Government.
“Our vision is of a nation in which society is prosperous and healthy, educated and skilled, innovative and dynamic, with wide access to essential goods and services, and where production and employment in all productive sectors correspond to the of an emerging economy”, he is stressed.
One day after the government cast was known, Xanana Gusmão referred to some of the controversies already provoked, namely the size of the Government and the use of elements that were already part of previous executives.
It is, he explained, a government based on an alliance between his party, the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT) and the Democratic Party (PD), with a “common commitment to restore the democratic rule of law”, a process that He believes that they have regressed in recent years.
“I realize that there is a bitter feeling that, after all, I gave priority to the former members of the executive of the IV and V Governments, of which I was prime minister. I can understand the disappointment of the Timorese society, for the lack of new political and technical cadres,” he said.
“It is in this sense, and to respond to the concern of Timorese society, that I want to explain that it was absolutely necessary to bring in people who already know the system, so that the efforts to restore legality can bring concrete and immediate results.” , he is stressed.
Regarding the “discomfort” due to the size of the executive -which itself is made up of 47 elements-, the prime minister said that a team of this magnitude was necessary because “the Government is committed to making a difference, in the plan, in the action”. and in the management of responsibilities”.
In her first speech after taking office, Xanana Gusmão recalled the moment, 12 years ago, when she also took office as prime minister, once again assuming what she considers a “great responsibility to continue the processes of building the State and the nation.” . “.
And he referred to the country’s past, since 2002 as a fragile State “in all aspects, from management and operational capacity to legal aspects”, and the will to move towards a new political environment, of resilience.
Now, he stressed, it is up to us to continue with that objective and with what is the will of the entire Timorese society.
A wish, he said, expressed by the Timorese population in the May elections, which left a clear message: “let’s save the democratic rule of law, to walk with optimism on the path of progress.”
And that he has promised to honor, repeating the message that he has made clear in recent weeks, that of replacing any member of the executive who does not fulfill his mission.
“To all the people we swear, today, that we are fully aware of our responsibilities and when any of us feels unable to carry out his mission, he will not hesitate to request his resignation from the functions in which he was invested,” he said. .
“This political message will decisively mark the history of the Nation, because it also serves as a political lesson for the future direction of the country, in order not to fall into the same errors that, if they continue, would lead our State to a situation of a failed state. “, said.
