The US is considering sending cluster munitions to Ukraine, the top military chief said Saturday.
General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the possibility has been “thought of for a long time”.
He pointed out that Russian troops use these bombs on the battlefield in Ukraine and that Ukrainian troops have already received these weapons from other allies.
Milley added during a speech at the National Press Club that discussions are underway.
These bombs open in the air and release other munitions, which are scattered over a wide area, with the aim of destroying several targets at once.
Another problem is the high failure rate in the explosion, about 40%, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Proponents of banning these bombs argue that they kill indiscriminately and endanger civilian populations long after they are fired.
Several groups have drawn attention to the use of this ammunition by the Russian military in Ukraine.
