Ukrainian writer Victoria Amelina, who was injured in the June 27 Russian bombing of a restaurant in Kramatorsk, died on Saturday. The news was brought forward this Sunday by PEN Ukraine, of which he was a member, after notifying all family members.
Victoria Amelina documented Russian war crimes with the human rights initiative Truth Hounds and was at the restaurant with a delegation of Colombian journalists and writers, including Héctor Abad Faciolince and former peace commissioner Sergio Jaramillo.
At least 13 people were killed and 60 injured in the attack. Among them Colombian writers.
“Doctors in Kramatorsk and Dnipro did everything they could to save her life, but the injuries were fatal and incompatible with life. In the last days of Victoria’s life, her best friends were with her,” the PEN Ukraine statement said.
Russia has consistently denied attacks against civilians or civilian infrastructure in the war it launched against Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
The Russian military said the attack on Kramatorsk targeted “a temporary command post of the Ukrainian Army’s 56th motorized infantry brigade”.
