Torrential rains force evacuation of 360,000 people in Japan

Japanese authorities on Monday ordered the evacuation of some 360,000 residents in the city of Kumamoto, on the southwestern island of Kyushu, due to torrential rains.

The rain has already caused the collapse of a bridge in that region.

On Saturday, the storm had caused one death and two people were reported missing in the west of the country.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of continued thunderstorms until noon on Tuesday and the possibility of flooding and landslides.
