A million euros has already raised a fund to support the family of the police officer who shot young Nahel and eventually killed him in Paris.
On Monday at noon, the support fund had about 50,600 donations, with a total value of one million euros.
“Support for the family of Nanterre police officer, Florian M., who has done his job and is paying a high price,” read the fundraising text, written by Jean Messiha, former spokesman for far-right politician Éric Zemmour.
The officer, who killed Nahel during a traffic stop last Tuesday, is currently in custody on charges of intentional manslaughter. The death of the 17-year-old has sparked some uprising and numerous citizen protests.
The creation and success of this fundraising campaign led to several expressions of outrage from the left-wing opposition. Deputy Clémence Guette denounced “absolute indecency and horror” via her Twitter account.
“The message? Is it worth killing a young Arab,” condemned left-wing MEP Manon Aubry, who called for the fundraiser to be removed on the Gofundme website.
A spokesperson for the site told AFP that the fundraising in question is “in line” with the rules, as the amounts are “paid directly to the family in question”, presented as a “beneficiary”.
As for the existence of other support funds, the Leetchi website raised almost 60,000 euros to help the policeman’s family. On another site, Nahel’s family received almost 200,000 euros.
