At least four people were killed and two injured in a shooting in Philadelphia, in the northeastern United States, on Monday, police said.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said at a news conference that all of the dead and injured were men.
The security forces responded to an alert issued at 8:30 p.m. Monday (1:30 a.m. today in Lisbon) and when they arrived on the scene, they found several people injured by gunfire.
Outlaw said Philadelphia Police Department officers detained a suspect in an alley without incident and that the man was wearing a body armor, multiple bullet casings, an assault rifle and a handgun.
“At the moment, all we know is that this person decided to leave his home and attack people.”Outlaw said.
Another police spokeswoman, Jasmine Reilly, told CNN that six of the injured were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and two to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
The attack came a day after a shooting at a weekend party in Baltimore, about 100 miles southwest of Philadelphia, that killed two people and injured 28.
The Gun Violence Archive recorded 339 mass shootings in the United States in the first half of the year, classified as such by the portal when they cause at least four deaths or injuries. This is the highest value ever.
Experts have tried to explain the rise in homicides and other forms of violence in recent years, accentuated during the covid-19 pandemic, because of the predominance of guns in the United States or less aggressive police tactics.
