Russia says it prevented ‘terrorist act’ at Moscow airport

Russia said on Tuesday it had shot down five Ukrainian drones in the Moscow region, citing a “terrorist act” that disrupted the operation of Vnukovo International Airport.

“An attempt by the Kiev regime to attack an area where civilian infrastructure is located, including an airport that receives international flights, is a new act of terrorism,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.in a post on Telegram.

“Given that Zelensky carries out these terrorist attacks with weapons supplied by the West or purchased with Western funds, this is international terrorism,” Zakharova said.

“The world community must realize that the United States, the United Kingdom and France – permanent members of the UN Security Council – are funding the terrorist regime,” a Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman wrote.

It was “another attempted attack with Ukrainian drones,” Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said.

The Russian military said it shot down all five drones and there were no damages or casualties.

“This morning an attempt by the regime in Kiev to commit a terrorist act with five drones,” which targeted Moscow and the outskirts of the Russian capital, was thwarted. the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

Four drones were destroyed by anti-aircraft systems, while a fifth was neutralized by “electronic means” before crashing, Russian authorities said.

Emergency services quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency said one of the drones was neutralized in Kubinka, about 40 kilometers from Vnukovo, leading to the temporary shutdown of the international airport.

Several flights were diverted to other airports and the Russian air transport agency said traffic on Vnukovo had since resumed.

State news agency RIA Novosti reported that two drones were shot down near the village of Valuevo, which is about 30 kilometers from the Kremlin, while another was neutralized near Kubinka, 40 kilometers from Vnukovo airport.
